Probably one of the most efficient dating services out there, Great Dating is incredibly easy and actually kind of fun to use. You can see it in the way things are laid out carefully, so that finding where you want and what you want to see is quick and effortless. Unlike some services, it’s not a matter of reading everything on the page just to find that one link to your messages or the ever-useful “help” section. This can’t be underrated… remember, you may up paying for this thing, so you want to be on a site that’s not only nice to look at but doesn’t overwork the brain matter.

In terms of features, Great Dating isn’t overloaded with silly little things. It’s got the basics, and the basics work well. On your main page you’ll find a couple of quick and easy tools. One, the “who’s interested” section, lays out your connections: who you’ve showed interest in, who’s shown interest in you, and when you have both shown interest in each other. Second, the “just my type” section, uses a formula to analyze those in which you’ve found interest and picks out some who are similar. If anything else, this gets your butt in gear by making you put yourself out there.

Setting up a profile is simple, and typical for a dating service. How tall are you, do you smoke, do you like yams, blah blah. Okay, I made the last one up, but as usual there’s probably more detail here than you need! Other than an “about me” and an “about my match” written area, everything’s pretty much just clicking on something you either like or dislike (no yams, though).

Searching is also easy, and pretty effective. It allows you a quick search, a search of those with photos only, or of who visited most recently. Yes, you can just search for someone who has blue eyes or something like that. Most importantly, and this isn’t something every site has, Great Expectations allows you to search not only by town, but by proximity to a town. So, if your car has only 25 miles’ worth of gas in it, you’re in luck, as is your lucky date.

This is all for free. Getting one of the paid memberships (at worst $19.95 for one month, down to the great price of $99.00 for a year) allows you more communication options. Free memberships can only “show interest” in others, which sends them an email saying that, well, you’re interested in them. Paid memberships can email and instant message to their heart’s content, and anyone can email replies to you for free… which is helpful when you want to talk to that hot girl from Topeka who just can’t afford to pay. You’ll also get more exposure through increased mailouts as a “match” to other members.

Great Dating also allows the increasingly popular “connect by phone” service, which gets you a real live voice at the cost of a one-time connection fee plus a by-the-minute charge. Of all of this, and something that maybe could have been mentioned sooner, is that Great Dating is part of a larger network of dating sites. This way, you get to search from (and get searched from) a massive database of potential matches that may not have signed up through the same site. Considering that Great Dating is quite cheap in comparison to other sites, this makes it a great bargain!
